Government Gives its Backing to New Home Builds

If you harbour dreams of building your own perfect family home from scratch, it is about to become a little easier for you to make those dreams a reality with new government legislation coming into force on April 1st.

From April, local councils will keep a register of individuals who are interested in building a new home. The idea is that this will assist councils in assessing demand and making more suitable land available, based on how many people are on their register.

The inability to find and purchase land is one of the greatest challenges for anyone embarking on a new home build project. A recent survey by the National Custom & Self-build Association found that 56% of potential self-builders considered this the most difficult hurdle to overcome.

This latest legislation by the government is a strong signal that they are determined to help self-builders overcome these hurdles and to unlock the country’s new build potential. It follows on from a commitment by the government to double the number of custom and self-build homes by 2020.

Having designed and constructed many new build homes over the years, we know how much happiness and fulfilment our clients get from seeing an empty plot of land turn into the house they’ve always wanted. Our hope is that the government will continue to support the sector so that more people get to have the opportunity to build the home of their dreams.
